Open Baton Mode - Striking
NOTE: You must watch the video in its entirety to progress and continue to the next lesson.
- Weapon Side Strike
• Assume the defensive stance with your weapon side foot to the rear and your baton in
the loaded position.
• Drive with your legs, rotate your hips sharply and turn your shoulders while striking.
• Let your elbow and wrist flow into the strike – follow through.
• Pay particular attention to your grip.
• Strike the target area with the last 3-4 inches of the baton.
• Using tactical commands, then immediately position yourself in the defensive stance
and re-load your baton for another strike if necessary.
This is called a ‘weapon side strike’
- Return Strike
The return strike is when returning the baton back to the loaded position after delivering a
weapon side strike. It is a reverse/backhand tennis method strike. Let your arm follow through
to return the baton back in to the loaded position.
This method creates distance between you and the suspect when returning to the loaded
position.
- Straight Strike
The straight strike is designed to create distance between you and the suspect.
From the defensive stance and loaded position, bring the baton into the ‘resting’ position in
front of you. With the baton open, both hands should be gripping the baton in an overhand
position.
Strike at a 45 degree angle downwards aiming for the lower abdomen/hip area. Your strike
should be full force impact, not a push, but a quick forceful ‘check’.
As you perform this ‘check’ you are using loud tactical commands. ‘Get Back”.
This technique is effective in public order as well as crowd control.
