Legal Status of a Security Guard under the Criminal Code Canada
Security guards have the same powers and authority as any other individual in Canada; no more and no less. These powers are outlined in this unit.
The Criminal Code of Canada outlines the legal limits that you must follow while in execution of your duty.
The Code states that all private citizens who enforce the law are protected if:
- They act on reasonable grounds (unless found committing the offense) ****
- They are justified
- They only use as much force as it is necessary
All three of these points must be met otherwise you may be charged with a criminal offence or held liable.
