Evidence Handling Techniques

Evidence Handling Techniques *****

Private Investigators may come across evidence that may be used in court, and should know how to collect and preserve evidence while preventing the evidence from becoming contaminated. They should also know how to present admissible evidence in court. The six core steps for containing evidence are collect, secure, preserve, identify, ensure continuity, and log.

Evidence is not truth. The purpose of presenting evidence is to prove or confirm a fact in question. Matching fingerprints from a crime scene to a defendant may prove that the prints belong to the defendant, and that he was present at the scene at some point. It doesn’t, however, prove the larger question of whether he killed the deceased. Supportive evidence is needed.
