Loading Your Handcuffs
NOTE: You must watch the video in its entirety to progress and continue to the next lesson.
It is required to ensure the handcuffs are set properly.
- Close the single bar on the handcuffs so there is only one or two notches sticking out the
double bar end of the handcuffs.
Closing the handcuffs in this manner ensures smooth and clean handcuffing of the suspect.
“If the cuffs are not correctly positioned in your cuff pouch prior to application, there is the
potential for fumbling. This presents a risk to officer safety. Before you start your shift always
be certain to conduct an equipment check.”
- Do not close the handcuffs too far. There is the potential for the single bar to unlatch
completely and therefore causing issues and delays while handcuffing the suspect.
- Proper loading of the handcuffs into the handcuff case.
• Hold the handcuffs parallel to the floor with the double bars facing your body.
• Look down at the handcuffs. Depending on the brand, you should see one keyhole, or
both.
• Close the handcuffs together and hold them with the double bars facing your weapon
side.
• Chain must be hanging downward.
• Drop the handcuffs into the handcuff case with the chain down, and the double bars
facing your weapon side.
