Drawing Your Handcuffs
place their hands behind their back”.
Once the suspect has turned around and their arms are behind their back, the officer will
remove their handcuffs and load them properly into their hand while keeping a safe distance.
Two positions for holding the handcuffs – Position 1 and Position 2
Position 1:
The handcuffs are removed and placed in a full hand grip in the weapon hand. Hold the
handcuffs with the weapon arm at a 90 degree angle with the elbow tight to the side of the
body.
The handcuffs should be parallel to the floor, and the double bars must be facing the officers
body.
Position 2:
Start with position 1, when approaching a suspect to make an arrest we will have the handcuffs
transitioning from position 1 to position 2.
From position 1, turn the weapon hand in an inverted “U” formation and slide the handcuffs
down the middle of the suspects back. The weapon hand should be in a fist formation with the
knuckles facing the ground.
